SCDOT Launches Enhanced 511 Traveler Information System
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has made enhancements to its 511 Traveler Information System, making it more user friendly and providing more information. SCDOT’s 511 system is an app, website and telephone system that provides real-time traffic information on all South Carolina interstate highways and some of the highways along the coast. The statewide system provides information on construction, lane closures, crashes, congestion and severe weather affecting traffic.

Users can call 511, check the app or access www.511SC.org 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new enhancements include:

  • New map that is significantly faster to load
  • Satellite map overlay
  • Layered information from the navigational app Waze
  • Inclusion of a nearby camera when navigating highway cameras
  • Rest Area markers
  • Evacuation Route markers
  • Ability to get directions
  • Enhanced emergency alerts
  • Ability to save favorite cameras and points of interest
  • A look-ahead feature that verbally notifies the driver of upcoming events such as a crash or construction (App only)

Did You Know You Can Get Free Credit Reports?
Consumers can now request one free credit report a week from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax until April 2021 because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) encourages consumers to take advantage of this new offer at AnnualCreditReport.com. One reason you may want to check your credit report often is to find and report and suspicious activity. Scammers are out in full force, taking advantage of the pandemic to steal consumers’ information and money. Keep an eye on your credit report to spot suspicious activity before it’s too late! To learn about different coronavirus scams, read SCDCA’s “How to Spot a Scammer” at https://consumer.sc.gov/sites/default/files/Documents/Spotlight/COVID-19 How to Spot a Scammer.pdf.

For an entire credit report guide, check out SCDCA’s new “Credit Reports: What They are and Why They Matter” at https://www.consumer.sc.gov/sites/default/files/Documents/Credit Reports – What They are and Why They Matter.pdf. Consumers who believe they are the victim of a scam or identity theft are encouraged to seek guidance from SCDCA’s Identity Theft Unit. Call (844) TELL DCA (835-5322) or fill out a Scam Report form by visiting the SCDCA website at https://consumer.sc.gov and clicking on the How Do… button, then Report a Scam.

Fact VS Rumors About the Coronavirus
If you need to figure out what’s true or false about responses to the coronavirus, check out FEMA’s rumor control site. FEMA has set up a page to help the public distinguish rumors and facts regarding responses to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Check it out at https://www.fema.gov/coronavirus-rumor-control.
